Fondere Architects was commissioned by the Bollenstreek Library to explore the possibilities for renovating and reorganising the Noordwijkerhout location. The aim: to create a future-proof library with new functions, a logical layout, and an inspiring atmosphere.
During this feasibility phase, we examine the building, its current facilities, user needs, and the ambitions for the future. This analysis reveals opportunities for improvement, expansion, and innovation.
Based on these insights, we developed three scenarios, ranging from substantial renovations to more modest adjustments. Each scenario includes:
- potential design solutions
- guiding principles for the new interior layout
- required structural modifications (what needs to be added or removed)
- recommendations for creating a clear, inviting, and inspiring library environment
Together, these scenarios provide a clear understanding of the spatial impact, the desired look and feel, and the level of investment involved.
The client reviews and discusses the scenarios internally with all relevant stakeholders. Based on this, a preferred direction is selected. Fondere Architects then further develops this choice into a detailed and actionable plan.
This project showcases how even a relatively small space can be transformed by embracing its existing qualities. The central load-bearing column and the semi-circular façade serve as natural starting points for creating a unique spatial experience and a functional layout.
