In 2008, Mecanoo won the competition to design the largest public library in Europe, a building that houses a collection of one million books. This project was a pivotal milestone in my career, not only because of its architectural challenges but also due to its profound cultural and social significance.
The library is a prime example of public architecture that responds to the needs of a diverse, multicultural society. Every architectural element and space within the building is designed to reflect the community and enhance accessibility.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned from this project is the importance of observation. By studying the city, existing libraries, and how different communities use spaces, I gained insight into what a library truly needs. From services that foster personal development to engaging environments for children of all ages, and from the significance of the collection to ensuring optimal accessibility—every aspect contributes to a library that serves as a social and cultural catalyst.
